The season of Advent invites us into a season of waiting and preparation surrounded by the warmth of the holidays. However, the sentimentality of the season often overshadows the truly scandalous and disruptive nature of the birth of Jesus. The silent night that we sing about is disrupted by God’s breaking into this world as possibly the most innocent and helpless thing imaginable, a newborn baby. This secretive, backwards, and even offensive entrance into the world is just the beginning of the ways Jesus catches us off guard, offends us, blows all expectations out of the water, and disrupts the foundations of the human world.
