The Tradition of Generosity

Writer's picture: Heather WhitmanHeather Whitman

A Lutheran and a Catholic get married, both knowing that their faith is important, but unsure of how to live out their theological differences. A Lutheran church within walking distance of their home is convenient so they visit a few times. When their first child is born, he’s baptized by their good friend, an Episcopal priest. Faith, family and the values we hold close all impact our faith journey, but it’s truly the people who welcomed us into that Lutheran church who made the difference.

Yes, that was indeed the reason my husband, the Catholic and I, the Lutheran, joined Christ the Servant Lutheran Church. When we walked through the doors with our young son it felt like home. The people felt like family, and we knew this was where we belonged. This congregation had a history of helping each other, the local community and beyond. Their focus on justice, loving your neighbor and feeding the hungry, spoke to us.

It’s easy to say that I learned generosity from my parents, and I did. In their professional lives and volunteer activities, they demonstrated giving and caring for those in need. But as I think more deeply about who has influenced my life, I think of my grandparents who were always willing to donate their time, energy and resources to others. I also think of my father-in-law, a man who would give you the shirt off his back and the last dollar from his wallet. I am grateful to have had so many generous people in my life. Continuing that tradition of generosity is another way to honor them.

As both a staff and congregational member of Christ the Servant, I see firsthand how supporting the church helps others. I’ve been witness to the person who has a roof over their head because the church was able to assist with rent. I’ve been hugged in gratitude by the mom who can feed her children because the church delivered a basket of food. I’ve shared in the joy of a man without transportation as he drives off in a car that was donated to him by the church. This is why I support the work of Christ the Servant.

My hope for the church and the next generation is that they too, can find belonging. That they will find affirmation, support, and love. I hope that despite any differences, they can unite around our shared humanity and know God’s grace.
