On March 3 1991 Rodney King was brutally beaten by officers of the Los Angeles Police Department. Films of the incident show the police using grossly excessive force. The four officers were tried and acquitted. Within hours riots started in Los Angeles which lasted six days. During that time 63 people were killed and 2,373 people were injured. It ended only after the National Guard, Army, and Marine Corps re-established control. After contemplating this morning’s readings I’m convinced that they are talking about three different diseases – diseases which make people sick today just as surely as they did in Bible times. I think we’ll call the first disease “Restless Soul Syndrome.” From our first lesson from Ecclesiastes it is obvious that the teacher has Restless Soul Syndrome. Earning money is meaningless, he says, because you just die with a bunch of it and there is no guarantee that the next generation is going to use it wisely.
